biography
flight of the valkyries
Far to the north of Othard is the Dalvalan Grath, a 'wasteland' north of the Tail Mountains. Despite its harsh winters and short summers, many people have thrived here since the Second Astral Era. Chief among the ancient cities is Hindarfjall, where for thousands of years the Valkyries - an order of lance-wielding warriors ordained by their Priestess - have been its stewards. Though sundered many times, the Valkyries remain, protecting the city and its people from monsters and invaders.
Mydia was born to the hundredth generation (for people lived far longer in the past, so she's told). She was born into a low caste and could never have ordinarily become a Valkyrie, were it not for her visions of High Queen Hydaelyn setting her apart from her peers and earning the High Priestess's attention. Much of Mydia's young adulthood was spent studying combat and scripture, fighting off monsters at the city perimeter, and hanging around her older 'siblings' as she learned the ropes. Finally, after many years of study, she'd earned the right to be called a Valkyrie in full and be gifted her very own soul stone, to bequeath the secret arts to her when she was ready. For centuries thereafter, she served faithfully as a Valkyrie in the lowest ranks, patrolling the city, enacting sacred rites, and culling monsters outside the walls.
Then, the world shivered. Hydaelyn's calls became more urgent. Mydia saw a vision of a great beast blanketing the sky. The Priestess assembled the Valkyries and their treasury - a bounty of crystals among it - and called upon a scripture to save them all. They called upon Brynhildr, the greatest Valkyrie, to save them; all but a quarter were ascended, turned into angelic forms who fought against their former siblings. Mydia was among the untempered Echo-gifted who rallied around a young commander to bury the city and the Primal with it. Mydia joined the group leading Hindarfjall's citizens outside the walls - she was too young to survive a fight with her siblings, and knew it. The last she remembers of the home she held dear is watching its walls sink beneath the snow, a giant hole forming in the earth's crust with the walled city far, far below...
Hindarfjall's people were able to take refuge at nearby cities as the Calamity worsened, but Mydia traveled farther west. She stayed in Corvos for some time (then Locus Amoenus), then traveled further north, then was driven south by Imperials, and eventually - after five years of travel - ended up in Eorzea. Could this be the fresh start she was searching for, after all this time? Gods, she hoped so.
sole survivor
Mydia is a Valkyrie, a lancing class similar to dragoons which also uses aerial feats to best their opponents. She uses a spear and a buckler shield as her primary weapons, wears light metal armor, and carries a soul stone shaped like a wing. She's not very good at magic but has keen combat skills enhanced by her Echo giving her precognition for battle hazards and enemy attacks. She also bears Hydaelyn's Blessing of Light, which marks her as a Warrior of Light - though she's unsure of just what the title means for her.
As an adventurer, Mydia upholds the oaths she took when she became a Valkyrie, though many are meaningless now that her home has been buried. She acts with faith in others, love for her friends and herself, and hope for the future, seeking out ways she might make the world a better place as part of her sacred duties. She's leery of gods, marking them all as Primals in her mind - even the Twelve, and even Hydaelyn - who can turn their followers into monsters at any moment. Still, when Hydaelyn talks to her, she feels warm and comforted; she can't bring herself to distrust Hydaelyn completely. Whether she wants to be a hero or not, it's the truth that Primals need to be stopped, and she's got the gifts to stop them.
